| Happy Independance Day, to all of my friends South of the 49th parallel |
[04 Jul 2008|12:01am] |
This is a personal favourite story from July of 1980, VERY appropriate in an election season 28 years later. I've had the panel where Cap speaks to his memory of Mrs Crosley in my head since the first time I read it - and the whole story says a lot about what makes this kind of character work.

i'm a huge bitch and it's big time annoying. i think it's because i don't know how to be "happy" by (what i think of as) "most peoples'" definition of happiness, and when most people are on cloud nine/telling me all about how they are "happy" in accordance with (what i think of as) "most peoples'" definition of happiness, i get pissed off. it's not because i'm jealous...or i want that kind of happiness...or even that i choose to be depressed and just don't seem to get that i'm supposed to be happy. no. i'm really just starting to think that my idea of "happiness" is probably something "most people" would think was kind of dumb.
things that "most people" equate to happiness that annoy me when discussed: -new relationships that do not involve some kind of awkwardness and/or (my notion of) "self exploration"...or anything that would otherwise make said relationship something weird and interesting to talk about. esp. if it's a heterosexual relationship and esp. if i was attracted to you at some point and vaguely feel like you should be attracted to me and not said person. i accept that this is mostly my problem and not "your" problem, whoever you are or have been. but it's still a crucial facet of my bitchiness. -discussions of how you're so happy because you're a "new person" and/or have turned over a "new leaf," paradigm shifts and such. no, you are not a new person. unless being more annoying somehow changed you on a biological level into a new species of moron. -discussions of purchases/consumer-based lifestyle changes that have magically converted you into a responsible adult. (see next bullet)
things that make me happy/i can talk about without silently wishing harm for you: -discussions of frivilous uses of your disposable income -discussions of stupid destructive relationships -discussions of how you hate everyone -discussions of how i'm ugly and you're ugly and gender roles and food -discussions of cats, cats we like, cats we would like to have someday -sitting silently and watching movies -eating and eating and eating -drinking and drinking and drinking
this is totally exagerrated if not a complete lie. this is how i feel right now (eh, maybe that's a lie. i felt this way before i made this post and kind of didn't immediately afterward.) i will assuredly not feel this way in half an hour. forget everything i just said.
p.s. watch out next time i get mad. i might throw a grapefruit at you. or i might throw a grapefruit off a balcony then pick up the little bits of grapefruit and throw them at your face. just warning you.

A German magazine reports that the full length original version of Metropolis has been found in Argentina, where it was sent in 1928 for its original theatrical run there. The Museo del Cine has now returned the film to Germany for restoration.

This seems almost too good to be true!

| Pepe Le Moko (1937) v. Algiers (1938) |

Hello everyone! I've been watching this community for a while, and so when I was wondering where to find people who might be able to answer a classic film related question I knew where to go.
I've been taking advantage of the summer down-time to finish up a 50 mystery movie DVD pack I bought years ago, and also to start on my quest to see the famous 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.
Last night I watched, from the 50 movie pack, Algiers (1938) and loved it! I saw on the imdb page that Charles Boyer was nominated for the Oscar for his performance in the film, and I couldn't have agreed more that he deserved it. The cinematography was beautiful and the writing elegant. In fact, I thought it was so good I went to see if it could be on the 1,001 list, only to discover that, even though it wasn't, a 1937 film called Pepe Le Moko was. I haven't seen it yet, but now I want to.
So, here's my question, has anyone seen both films? If so, which do you prefer? Has anyone seen one or the other and loved it or hated it?
Edit: Ooops, forgot to mention, for those that don't know, I'm comparing these two as they have the same plot and characters. In addition, it says its not based off a real person, so does anyone know if there's a book or play that came before the films? Seems a strange (albeit wonderful) story to tell twice...

Kathryn Immonen is a long-standing F.O.O.P. (Friend of Ol' Pappy!) and one of my favourite people in the world, so the delight in seeing just how much fun she's packed her first issue of PATSY WALKER: HELLCAT (on the stands today) with fills me with pride and joy from front to back and back up the side. Magic talking polar bears with antlers - yep, my kinda book. I can't wait 'til the Old Timer gets his own mini-series, Kathryn (if it can happen for Ambush Bug, I'm clinging to my dreams). The art by David LaFuente is real pretty, too, and the cover's by some husband named Stuart.
Fabulous Fashion and Non-Stop Action

Also, Mike Kunkel's long-awaited BILLY BATSON AND THE MAGIC OF SHAZAM #1 is on the racks today, and is a thing of frickin beauty! How many comics come with a secret code that is intentional these days, rather than the over-elaboration of continuity that no-one but the nerds can follow? I seriously question how non-cartoonish a character who is a little boy who gets struck by a magic bolt of lightening and who has a talking tiger in a regular supporting position and an evil green worm from Venus as one of his arch enemies has to be. TEH WIMSEY? Bring it on, man!

I mean, just look at his design for Sivana!
 Now THAT'S Sivana!
Much more on Kunkel's SHAZAM at his blog right here!
Get to the shops and buy em! (and yes, Rachel, I've saved one of each for you)

| Oops. Forgot one. Added another. |
[01 Jul 2008|05:24pm] |
I forgot one movie in my June review, and I watched one last night. Here are the non-spoilery reviews.
The Band Wagon - I'm a huge Fred and Ginger fan so watching Fred dance with another woman is always a trying experience. Cyd Charisse is such a marvelous dancer that I survived. Very good movie.
Stallion Road (1947) - Ronald Regan isn't the first president I remember, but he's the first one I paid attention to. As a result, it's weird to see him playing a character in a movie. But, he was really rather good as an actor. I remember laughing my ass off when I saw him for the first time on screen. It probably didn't help that he was playing a drunkard (I believe the movie was Dark Victory). As far as Stallion Road goes, it's an enjoyable B movie that's a decent way to wile away 90 minutes. Especially if you like horses.
